Parents sue daughter they abandoned as toddler for ‘maintenance payments’ after finding out she grew up to be ‘well off’
A WOMAN who was abandoned as a toddler has been sued by her estranged parents after she refused to buy her brother a flat.
The 29-year-old, known only as Zhang, was abandoned by her mum and dad who reportedly felt as though they could not support her financially.
But when the daughter bought herself an apartment, her parents demanded she also buy one for her brother.
When Zhang refused, the parents incredibly brought her to court and sued her for 500,00 yuan, which is around £63,000.
While their attempted cash grab was not entirely successful, a Chinese court did rule that Zhang would have to pay “parental maintenance”.
The South China Morning Post reports the bizarre story has sparked outrage across social media.

Zhang, who lives in Guangzhou in Southern China, was abandoned by her parents as a two-year-old and raised by her aunt.
She reportedly had little interaction with her biological parents until she bought herself an apartment with money she had saved.
Zhang was then contacted by her mum and dad who demanded that she buy her biological brother a flat as well.
When she refused, the defendant was taken to court.

The judge ruled that while she was not obligated to buy her brother property, she was legally required to help her mum and dad financially.
The court said Zhang must negotiate an amount to pay her parents under a “parental maintenance fee”.
This is because under Civil Code in China, adult children have a legal obligation to support their parents regardless of estrangement or abandonment.
The ruling has reportedly infuriated social media users on Chinese site Weibo.
The Post reports that people have branded the parents “horrible” and “vampires”.
