WICHITA, Kan. – Bolstered by the steady play of Trenton Sutherland (SO/Arkansas City, Kan. ) and Gerardo Alemany (SO), the Friends University Falcons came out on top of the Crestview Fall Invitational that wrapped up yesterday (Sept. 20) at the Crestview Country Club in Wichita.
Sutherland (71-69-76-216) and Alemany (72-69-75-216) each tied for second overall to lead the Falcons to the victory.
As a team, the Falcons shot 291 in each of the final two rounds to finish +13 and 21 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Garden City CC.
"I am very proud of the guys," said Friends University Director of Golf and men's golf head coach Dustin Galyon. "I thought our mental toughness was fantastic during the last round of the tournament. We took some major steps forward as a team and understanding what it means to compete!"
The Falcons also sported two more top seven finishers in Louis Louchet (SR) (sixth - 75-75-72-222) and Trinton Nobles (SO) (seventh – 77-78-68-223). Nobles came on strong late, with his 68 score pacing the entire field during the final round.
Braulio Graino (SO/La Coruna, Spain) (82-78-78-238) also wound up tied for 33rd for Friends.
On the women's side, the Falcons got a huge performance from Kennedy Birk (JR/Lawrence, Kan. ), who came through with a top-five finish with an 80-83-163 to fuel a top-three team result.
Behind Birk for the Falcons was Ava Staver (FR/Highlands Ranch, Colo. ) (89-85-174) in 12th and Emily Hill (FR/Columbiana, Ohio) (88-92-180) in 16th.
Hailey Reavis (JR/Omaha, Neb. ) (94-95-189) finished in 18th place, while Alayna Welch (FR/Wichita, Kan. ) (98-99-197) tied for 24th.
"I am happy with our progress this fall as we continue to improve and become more competitive," said Friends women's golf head coach Paul Howe. "The last two tournaments we have been really close to finishing in the top two. We have to overcome poor holes down the stretch to be able to finish at the top of the leaderboard. Congratulations to Kennedy for her top-five finish!"
The Men's Golf Falcons are next scheduled to compete at the Kansas Wesleyan Invite next week (Sept. 26-27) at the Salina Country Club in Salina, Kan., while the Women's Golf Falcons are now set for KCAC Match Play (Oct. 3-4) at the Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City, Kan.
