Eugene Perelshteyn defends and criticizes Carlsen on the Hans Niemann cheating accusations
After 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, the World Chess Champion decided to withdraw from the event. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy is the top news in mass medias ever since. Magnus broke the silence by giving the interview after the Preliminary stage of the Julius Baer Generation Cup where he resigned the game against Niemann after only two played moves. Later on Carlsen released a full statement accusing Nieman of cheating.
GM Eugene Perelshteyn defends Carlsen’s values by saying, “I don’t have a problem with Magnus taking a high moral ground to not play vs anyone who ever cheated in online chess. That would be respectable and maybe some kids will think twice about cheating.” However, Eugene Perelshteyn criticizes the way Carlsen carried his actions, “Losing & accusing Hans [Niemann] of cheating OTB with no evidence is different!”
