Forty years ago, in 1982, the Commonwealth Games were held in Brisbane, and were officially opened by Prince Philip who read a message from the Queen. The gigantic mechanical kangaroo Matilda was the mascot for the games, and performed a lap of honour, ‘winking’ at the crowd.
