Ben Davies claims Spurs teammate has not had it as easy as people think

0

Ben Davies has claimed that Son Heung-min has not always had it easy at Tottenham and the South Korean had to work extremely hard to get to the level he has.

Despite having been one of the most potent attackers in England over recent years and winning the Premier League Golden Boot last season, Son was coming under pressure a couple of weeks ago in light of his poor start to the season.

Antonio Conte made the decision to leave the 30-year-old on the bench for the clash against Leicester City and when he was introduced just before the hour mark, the forward responded by netting a hat-trick.

Son carried that momentum into the international break, scoring in South Korea’s clashes against Costa Rica and Cameroon.

Davies has now remarked that the former Bayer Leverkusen man had to contend with similar challenges in the past at Tottenham, notably when he first arrived at the club back in 2015.

The Welshman said about Son (via Vai Bhardwaj): “Some people just assume that when you a player as good as he is now that everything has been pretty straightforward. I don’t think that has been the case with him. He’s worked incredibly hard.

“When he first arrived (at Tottenham), there were games were he was on the bench, he wasn’t getting on.

“He’s really had to put in the hard yards to be where he is today and I think that Golden Boot is exactly what he deserved for how good he has been for us and the hard work he has put in.”

Davies also opened up on his relationship with Son, admitting that they have become quite close over the years.

When asked if the forward was his ‘bestie’ at Spurs, the defender responded: “Yeah, I’ll have to say so.

“He’s someone I’ve played with for a long time here and off the pitch as well, he’s a top top guy. When you see people pretty much every day of your lives, you’re definitely going to create a bond and get closer with those people.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even during Son’s lacklustre start to the season, there was no suggestion by Conte or anyone else that the South Korean’s attitude was off or that he was not working hard enough in training.

That is why the 30-year-old is loved by everyone at Tottenham and the celebrations after his goals against Leicester showed just how popular he is in the dressing room.
