My boyfriend expects me to pay for everything as I earn more than him
DEAR DEIDRE: JUST because I earn a little more, my boyfriend expects me to pay for everything.
He’s 26, I’m 25 and we’ve been together for ten months.
At the start of the year, he decided he wanted to change careers and become a teacher.
As he’s starting over, he’s had to take a pay cut.

Now, whenever we’re out, he expects me to pay. He’ll wait for me to get my purse out, and ask: “Are you sure?”
I can’t afford to keep paying for everything, so how do I ask him to split the bill, or even offer to pay sometimes?

DEIDRE SAYS: Talking about money can be uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t be ashamed of asking your boyfriend to pay his way.
Sit him down and explain that, while you’re happy to treat him sometimes, he also needs to contribute to your meals or days out.
