Water main bursts in Van Nuys, sending large chunks of asphalt into the air

A water-main ruptured with explosive force Wednesday afternoon in Van Nuys, sending hunks of asphalt into the air and onto the roadway.

The main burst on Peach Avenue just north of Victory Boulevard, sending a column of water 60 to 70 feet into the air.

Los Angeles firefighters responded to the scene and to make sure there was no danger posed to residents and motorists.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was called to shut down the main.
