A woman has been fined more than £1,000 for failing to remove dog poo from her own back garden.

Alison Dawson has been ordered to pay £1,038 after refusing to clean up the mess which had become an ‘eyesore’.

The images posted on social media show piles of litter, a big fridge, and dog poo mounded up in the garden.

Dawson ignored numerous letters from the council, including a Community Protection Notice, urging her to get rid of the mess from her property.

Durham County Council wardens said on social media: ‘A female from South Moor has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice which required her to remove waste and dog faeces from her yard.

‘Alison Dawson of South Moor ignored notices to remove waste from the yard of her property and now has to pay a total of £1,038 in fines and costs and she has now been left with a criminal record.’

Commenters expressed disgust at the state of the garden, with some even saying they ‘feel sorry for the poor dog’.

Durham is not the only area with a dog poo problem – in Derby residents have been left feeling ‘disgusted’ after an unknown culprit has been hanging animal waste on trees.

At least 40 plastic sacks were found hanging on branches near an old railway bridge in Mickleover during just one inspection.

Meanwhile, in Dorset, the council has refused to buy a new dog poo bin for a footpath, leaving dog poo to pile up.

Walkers have called the piles ‘horrible’ as dog mess is being repeatedly dumped alongside the footpath in Weymouth.

Instead a worker is sent to clear the piles, but locals have also been left to removing the foul-smelling mess.
