I’m a food expert, four simple swaps you can make to slash your food bill – some even cut it in half
IF you were to browse the fish counter in your local supermarket, which type would you go for?
We can guarantee it would be one of the so-called “big five” – cod, salmon, tuna, prawns or haddock.
There are several swaps that will slash your weekly bill[/caption]But did you know that just one simple swap could dramatically reduce the price of your weekly shop?
In tonight’s episode of Save Money on Your Supermarket Shop, which airs on Channel 5 at 7pm, presenter Angellica Bell heads out to investigate one of the ways you can cut your bill in half.
She meets with fish mongers in Hatton, who specialise in sustainably caught fish that taste just as good as their popular counterparts – but at a fraction of the price.
While there, Angellica, who co-hosts the consumer series with Alexis Conran, meets with Ross Arnold to chat about some of the fish we are overlooking.

The pair head to the kitchen, where the fish monger runs through the tasty alternatives and the all important savings in an item called “the fish swap out”.
He tells Angellica that British favourite cod can be easily swapped for hake or coley.
The result? An equally delicious dish, but whereas cod costs £1.20 per 100g, hake comes in at 90p. While coley slashes the bill in half, as it’s just 60p.
Up next, Ross says that another popular fish, lemon sole, which is per £1.50 100g, should be substituted for megrim sole at 25p.

He says that it not only offers a “huge saving” but is also a “very tasty fish”.
The third fish swap is mackerel (£1.10) to herrings (15p), which can save customers a whopping 95p per 100g.
Last, but by no means least, Ross said that salmon can be left in the shop counter, while rainbow trout can make its way into the basket.
That’s because salmon costs £1.90 per 100g, whereas trout is considerably cheaper at £1.10.
Be adventurous – don’t be afraid to try something different
Ross also shares his top three tips with Channel 5 viewers, as he tells them to use their fishmonger for valuable advice.
He explains: “Ask them what’s in season, what’s sustainable and often that will be the best value.

“Secondly, be adventurous – don’t be afraid to try something different.”
While his third gem is to “buy British”, as he continues, “there’s loads of species people haven’t heard of, loads of sustainable seafood, just give it a go.”
