Journalist predicts Spurs could compete with Man City for 23-year-old
Journalist Dean Jones has predicted that Tottenham Hotspur will not shy away from competing with Manchester City for the services of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
Bastoni was reportedly Tottenham’s top target for the left centre-back role this summer (Football.London) but the North London club ended up signing Clement Lenglet on loan instead after the Italy international’s agent declared his client wanted to remain at the San Siro (Football Italia).
However, the Inter star has had a difficult start to the season, and reports from Italy suggested last week (CMW.it) that should the defender fall out with Simone Inzaghi, Antonio Conte’s men could look to swoop for the player either in January or next summer.
It has also emerged recently (Gazzetta dello Sport) that Manchester City are eyeing a deal for the 23-year-old, with Pep Guardiola alleged to be a big fan of the centre-back.
Jones has said that Spurs could have a chance of beating City to Bastoni’s services as long as Conte is still at the club.
When asked about City’s interest in the Inter defender could scupper Tottenham’s hopes of signing the player, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “In the past, I think they’d have probably feared the worst.
“But right now, I think that they would have reason to still be willing to go head-to-head for something like this.
“Conte’s got a good record so far with players brought in from Italy; that’s a good selling point.
“As long as the player himself would be assured that Conte is hanging around, then I think that Tottenham would have a good a chance of anyone of competing with Man City if they do go for Bastoni.”

The one advantage we have over Manchester City is the Conte factor. It was under the Spurs boss that Bastoni became a regular at Inter and the defender has spoken in glowing terms about the impact that the 53-year-old had on his career.
Bastoni also understands Conte’s system well and knows that he is well suited to the style of play, which would reduce the risk involved with a move to the Premier League.
