Sports briefs: San Rafael holds off Tam in a thriller

Estelle Engelskirchen’s fourth goal of the game proved to be the winner as the San Rafael High girls water polo team held on for a 10-9 victory against Tam Thursday night.

Engelskirchen’s decisive goal came with 1 minutes, 15 seconds left on the clock, breaking a 9-9 tie. Engelskirchen also had two steals for San Rafael (3-3, 1-1 MCAL).

Ellie Diaz had two goals and five steals for the Bulldogs in a game in which they trailed 4-1 after the first quarter. Dylan Moayedi had a pair of goals and assists while goalie Eliza Gould had 10 saves.

Tam won the boys varsity game against San Rafael, 21-2. The Red-tailed Hawks (15-3, 5-0) face St. Ignatius on Monday.

Girls volleyball

Lin Borland and Sarah Brown combined for 15 assists, 12 digs and four aces to help lead Marin Academy to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 win against San Domenico Friday. Noa Friedman-Lowenthal and Kayla Saxon combined for 13 kills and 10 digs for MA (14-10, 6-1 BCL West).

Girls tennis

Redwood got a victory at No. 1 singles and pulled out a pair of super-tiebreakers en route to a 6-1 victory against Miramonte Thursday.

Jordan Marotto picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Miramonte’s lone win came at No. 2 singles. Julia Laury went the distance to get the win at No. 3 singles, pulling out a 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 victory.

Redwood’s other super-tiebreaker win came courtesy of Jennie Liu and Gwenn Ricordel at No. 2 doubles.

• San Domenico got a win at No. 2 singles from Scarlett Wilson and swept the two doubles matches to secure a 3-2 victory against Bay School on Friday. Eva Laborde-Turner and Mariah Nyberg won at No. 1 doubles while Nina Polyakova and Blanca Rosello pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 win at No. 2 doubles.

Men’s soccer

Jesus Duran scored in the 90th minute to lift Dominican University to a 1-0 road win against Hawaii Pacific Thursday night.

The Penguins played with a man advantage for the final four minutes after a Hawaii Pacific player was sent off with a red card. Diego Grande provided the assist for the Penguins (6-3-0, 2-0-0 PacWest).

Women’s soccer

Marissa Ray scored early in the second half as Dominican battled Hawaii Pacific to a 1-1 draw Thursday night.

Ray’s goal came in the 47th minute, assisted by Tanya Bills. Hawaii Pacific had held the lead since scoring the opening goal in the 13th minute.

Hawaii Pacific held a narrow advantage in shots (7-6). Both teams put four of their shots on target.
