EU to apply sanctions against those who help Russia circumvent restrictions
The European Union for the first time introduced an extraterritorial element in the eighth package of anti-Russian sanctions, RBC reports citing Tomasz Wlostowski, managing partner of the EuTradeDefense consulting firm.
The interlocutor of the agency believes that the EU will include in the new sanctions lists citizens and organizations from third countries that participate in the mechanisms for avoiding sanctions restrictions by Russians.
“This is a kind of 180-degree turn for the EU, which until recently complained about the extraterritorial application of sanctions by the US authorities against non-US persons,” Wlostowski said.
RBC finds this approach similar to the American one, which includes the introduction of secondary sanctions – measures against non-US citizens and organizations that provide assistance to Russian citizens from the sanctions lists.
