The US should reconsider its diplomatic ties with Caracas. And, first of all, it needs to part with the idea that Juan Guaido is the “true leader” of Venezuela, divorced from reality, says The New York Times columnist William Newman.

According to the author of the publication, so far the Venezuelan oppositionist has only demonstrated his mediocrity. He never had a viable plan other than hopes of a military coup or US intervention. In addition, he supported the sanctions, which further harmed his country.

“The White House needs a policy on Venezuela based on facts, not fiction. And the fact is that Maduro is the president of the country, and Guaido is not,” Newman sums up.
