The Mets will keep their general manager and manager for the 2023 season.
GM Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter will remain in their roles through at least the end of next season.
According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma the Mets are still looking to hire a President of Baseball Operations but that is a long term initiative and doesn’t need to be implemented this offseason.
Eppler and Showalter helped bring the Mets to a 101 win season in each of their first season at the helm of their position.
Eppler and his staff added Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar to the team last offseason and didn’t sell the farm at the trade deadline to keep the team competitive in the long term.
Showalter was integral in changing the clubhouse culture and leading the day-to-day of one of the most successful Mets regular seasons they’ve ever had.
So for at least one offseason the Mets won’t reshuffle the deck in their leadership roles and hopefully be focused on what to do with their plethora of free agents and player options.
New York will need to make pitches to retain core players like Jacob deGrom, Brandon Nimmo, Chris Bassitt and more. Certainly Showalter will be involved in the pitch to them some way but ultimately it comes down to Eppler’s staff and how much owner Steve Cohen is willing to spend.
