UN Human Rights Council Election: Afghanistan Not Elected

0

The United Nations General Assembly elected 14 new members of the Human Rights Council for the term 2023–2025. Afghanistan and South Korea, however, were not successful in winning the election.

Six countries from the Asia-Pacific region — Bangladesh, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Vietnam, and Afghanistan — competed for the four seats allotted to this region in the election.

Elections for the Human Rights Council were held on Tuesday, October 11. Of the 13 seats allocated to the Asia-Pacific region, 9 were already filled; Afghanistan and South Korea were not successful in the election for the remaining seats.

As a result of the Taliban government’s severe restrictions on women, girls, and curtailing freedoms, Afghanistan’s membership in the Human Rights Council was a challenging goal.

Any country that wants to become a member of this council must adhere to the highest standards for the promotion and protection of human rights both domestically and internationally.

A General Assembly resolution states that the Human Rights Council is made up of 47 Member States, each of which is elected by a large majority of the General Assembly’s members in a secret ballot.

Had Afghanistan won the election, the Human Rights Council seat would have allowed the voice and concerns of the Afghan people to be amplified on an international level.

Afghanistan conceded in the UN Human Rights Council elections at a time when there are increasing reports of human rights violations in the country and many countries in the international community are concerned about the deterioration of human rights in Afghanistan.
