Reported school shootings in Oakland, San Jose prove to be hoaxes

Police who rushed to McClymonds High in West Oakland on Wednesday morning with a caller telling them that a person on the campus had shot 10 people said the whole thing was a hoax.

It was a scene that repeated itself throughout the Bay Area on Wednesday.

Police rushed to at least three Bay Area schools after somebody reported the same carnage. Nothing was amiss at any of them.

About two dozen Oakland police officers descended upon the campus in the 2600 block of Myrtle Street, only to determine within minutes everything was normal.

Police cleared McClymonds before a school-wide lockdown could go into effect fully. Police were called there about 11:20 a.m. when somebody told police they were in a closet and that 10 students had been shot in a room nearby.

Police did not find a shooting scene or anybody injured.

On Wednesday, as Oakland Deputy Police Chief James Beere said, “these calls (were) not organic to Oakland.” He said police will investigate to find the caller.

In San Mateo County, sheriff’s deputies responded about 10:02 a.m. to Woodside High on Churchill Avenue for reports of a possible active shooter and searched the campus. Sheriff’s office Lt. Jacob Trickett in a statement said deputies found no unusual activity.

Deputies initially locked down the school during the search. The lockdown was lifted after deputies confirmed the hoax.

San Jose police received a report about 10:55 a.m. that multiple students had been shot at Lincoln High in the 500 block of Dana Avenue. Police said they began to clear the school before determining the call had been a hoax.

Both San Jose police and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said they will investigate the callers.

The FBI’s San Francisco bureau did not immediately respond to inquiries about whether it also will investigate.
