A new deadly strain of COVID-19 has been reportedly created at Boston University.

According to the Daily Mail, a team of scientists from Massachusetts and Florida took a spike protein from the original virus and added it to the Omicron virus. The combination of the two viruses mixed together resulted in killing eight out of the ten mice that were infected with the spiked protein.

The research involved tinkering with viruses to make them more lethal or infectious. The experiment was conducted with the hopes of getting ahead of a future outbreak.

The test results revealed that the new COVID-19 strain has an 80% death rate compared to the 0.3% lethality of the original virus. As the new virus successfully infects human cells, the dangerous gain-of-function experiments continue.
