Union City: Assault suspect arrested after six-hour standoff

UNION CITY — A 26-year-old woman was in county jail after ending a standoff inside a residence and surrendering to police, who arrested her as a suspect in connection with a weekend beating incident, authorities said.

In a statement Monday, police said officers responded around 1:50 a.m. Sunday to the residence in the 34000 block of Alvarado Niles Road for a report of a person hit in the head with a pipe.

When officers arrived, they found a 28-year-old man suffering from multiple wounds and cuts, and provided care until other first responders took him to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police were not able to provide an update on his condition Monday.

After the man told police he had been attacked by his girlfriend, police learned that other law enforcement agencies, including the San Francisco sheriff’s department, had a warrant for her arrest. Detectives then sought their own warrant for her arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting corporal injury.

Shortly before 6:35 p.m. Sunday, officers saw Edwards enter the residence on Alvarado-Niles and they set up a perimeter, blocking off southbound lanes for several blocks before contacting her to come out.

When she declined and barricaded herself inside the residence, police called out to the department’s SWAT team for help, as well as the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office for use of its drone and other resources.

After a standoff that lasted until 12:45 a.m. Monday, the woman left the residence and was taken into custody. She was held in Santa Rita Jail on $5,000 bail and facing arraignment Wednesday at Dublin’s East County Hall of Justice, according to an Alameda County records check Monday night.
