Sports briefs: Marin Academy golf places second at league championship
The Marin Academy girls golf team potentially capped off its inaugural season with a second-place finish at the Bay Counties League West/East championship at Corica Park in Alameda Monday.
Parker Rothbart led all Wildcats by carding a 90 at the par-72 course. Rothbart’s score makes her eligible to go to the North Coast Section Division II championship as an individual next Monday.
MA shot 401 as a team, 26 shots behind St. Joseph, which won the event on its home course with a 372.
Stephanie Zola carded a 94 and Cameron Colpitts shot a 98 for MA. Coach John Haight plans to apply for an at-large bid to the NCS D-II tournament, which is set to take place at Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma.
Girls tennis
Audrey Gilmor moved up to No. 1 singles for Branson, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win to lead the Bulls past San Rafael, 6-1, on Monday. Branson swept the singles matches with Kate Warren, Alexa Warren and Simone Schactner picking up the other victories. San Rafael’s win came at No. 2 doubles, courtesy of Mackenzie Benson and Emi Villanueva.
- Jordan Marotto and Payton Grafield battled through a competitive first set before Marotto pulled away in the second for a 6-4, 6-1 victory — part of Redwood’s 7-0 sweep of Novato Monday. Gwenn Ricordel, Lindsay Reed and Charlotte Brod had the other singles wins for the Giants.
Prep football
Tomales’ streak of opponents forfeiting game was extended to three this past week, but the Braves were able to find a replacement game, winning 40-0 against Anderson Valley. Potter Valley pulled out of the originally scheduled game. Tomales (4-3, 4-0 North Central III) has won four consecutive wins while playing just twice in the past four weeks. Quarterback Jonathan Semorile threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for another. J.R. Rodas and Ryan Murray caught touchdowns while Jaime Velazquez, David Lopez and Carlos Lara also ran for scores.
