Diakite was a standout preseason performer.

After a standout preseaso, Mamadi Diakite is sticking around with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Per a release from the team, Diakite has signed a two-way deal with the Cavs. Originally signed as a training camp invitee, he averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks in 16.8 minutes per game. Diakite takes the two-way slot that opened up when the Cavs waived RJ Nembhard.

The 6’9”, 25-year-old Diakite went undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft after playing for Virginia in college; he won a national title in 2019. He has spent time in both the NBA and G League. He started out with the Bucks in the NBA and was on their 2021 title team on a two-deal. From there, he spent time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. And in the G League, he won a title with the Lakeland Magic.

Diakite is the second Cavs two-way signee to come from Virginia; London Perrantes was the first during the 2017-18 season.

What Diakite’s role will be is likely depth. He’ll likely spend most of his time with the Cleveland Charge in the G League, but could be someone the Cavs turn to if injuries happen to any frontcourt pieces. Based on his preseason efforts, he’ll at least play with energy and offer something more.
