Forrest has made just four league appearances this season and it was his first start of the campaign when he was named in the starting eleven against Hibernian on Saturday.

The 31-year-old grabbed the opportunity with both hands and scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win for Celtic over Hibs at Parkhead.

Ferguson has been a major admirer of the winger for a long time and stressed that his quality was never in doubt.

He conceded that Forrest has not been getting as much game time as others under Ange Postecoglou and rarely starts a game for Celtic these days.

But the former midfielder stressed that the hat trick on Saturday showed that he still has a future at Celtic moving forward.

Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show: “He is a quality player, no doubt about it.

“He is not getting as much game time as he would like, but he showed his quality at weekend against Hibs.

“He has not started many games under Postecoglou.

“But the hat-trick showed that he still got a part to play in this Celtic team going forward.”

Forrest has spent his entire career at Celtic and has made more than 450 appearances for the Scottish giants.
