Di Marzio says Conte ‘wants to stay at Tottenham’ under one condition
Gianluca Di Marzio has said that Antonio Conte is keen on remaining at Tottenham and wants to win silverware with the North London club.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Spurs are set to offer Conte a new contract worth more than £20million-a-year, which would make the Italian the highest-paid manager in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reported on Sunday that the Tottenham head coach is willing to open discussions with the North London club regarding a new deal.
However, Conte has continued to be tight-lipped on his future, with the 53-year-old stating in his press conference on Monday that his contract situation is ‘not important’ and that he will speak with the club in due course (Football London).
Reports from Italy over the last couple of months have suggested that the Spurs boss is open to returning to Juventus when his contract with the Lilywhites runs out at the end of the season, which is why he is reluctant to extend his current deal (Calciomercato).
Di Marzio has now said that while Conte wants to remain at Tottenham, he could leave if the Premier League club do not match his ambition.
When asked about the 53-year-old’s future, the journalist told Wettfreunde: “Antonio Conte definitely wants to stay at Tottenham and he’s a successful manager so he wants to win.
“But if Tottenham and Conte aren’t on the same page when it comes to winning trophies, he could go to a big club in Italy.
“Juventus could be a possibility if they want to change coaches at the end of the season. Paris St Germain could also be a possibility, but any top club in the world could be if we talk about Antonio Conte.”
Spurs Web Opinion
What Di Marzio has said is common knowledge as Conte is not the sort of manager who commits himself to a project unless he gets assurances that he would be backed.
Having said that, the 53-year-old probably realises that he has a great job at the moment and so, I do not think he will make unrealistic demands to the Spurs hierarchy.
I fully expect the Italian to agree to sign a new contract with the club before the season resumes after the World Cup.
