  • Netflix has delayed a docuseries from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to Deadline.
  • The decision comes after former UK PM John Major criticized a storyline in the upcoming "Crown" season.
  • Netflix has defended the series as a "drama" and "work of fiction."

Netflix subscribers will have to wait for a new docuseries from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Deadline reported on Monday that the streamer has delayed the doc, which the outlet said was set to be released in December, to 2023 amid backlash from former UK Prime Minister John Major toward the upcoming season of "The Crown."

Netflix did not immediately return a request for comment. In a comment to Deadline, Netflix said "there's never been any documentary from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed."

The Duke and Dutchess signed a Netflix deal in 2020 to produce content for the company, including documentaries.

The "Crown" storyline that riled Major depicts then-Prince Charles meeting with Major to complain about not being propelled to king yet to replace his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

In the events of "The Crown," Charles was agreeing with a 1991 Sunday Times poll that argued the Queen, who was in her mid-60s at the time and had been in power for nearly 40 years, should abdicate the throne to Charles, according to Deadline.

Major insisted the meeting never happened, and called it "a barrel load of malicious nonsense," according to the British outlet Daily Mail.

The apparent "Crown" scene would come after Queen Elizabeth died in September after seven decades in power, with King Charles taking the throne at the age of 73.

Season five of "The Crown" premieres November 9. This isn't the first time Netflix has faced criticism over the show's depiction of the royal family.

Oliver Dowden, the former UK digital and culture secretary, urged the company in 2020 to add a disclaimer to the series that it's a work of fiction.

Netflix declined, saying at the time that the company has "always presented 'The Crown' as a drama and we have every confidence our members understand it's a work of fiction that's broadly based on historical events."
