Baseball5 continues growth in South Africa with demonstrations, clinics across the country

After qualifying for the first WBSC Baseball5 World Cup, South Africa is striving to grow the game across the country. The South African Baseball Union (SABU) is leading the movement with demonstrations and clinics across the country.

The Gauteng Province Baseball Council (GPBC) in association with the SABU organised on Sunday a Baseball5 session to introduce people to the sport. The event was held at the Edenvale Sports Grounds in Edenvale, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Approximately 30 children participated in the activity, with the guidance of three Game Officials and five coaches. The kids played several games as they were introduced to the basics on the five-on-five mixed discipline.

“The event was successful in motivating the players and coaches from the Alexandra Baseball Club to spread the word about Baseball5 in their area,” said Jason Bell, one of the officials that run the activity.

This In addition, from 17–21 October 2022, the SABU will introduce and present the game of Baseball5 in the Free State, with stops in Sasolburg, Bothaville, Welkom, Smithfield and Bloemfontein.

South Africa is one of three African nations qualified for the maiden Baseball5 World Cup, set to take place in Mexico City from 7-13 November. The South African squad defeated Kenya in the final of the Baseball5 African Championshipheld in Tanzania to win the first continental title.
