India's adoption of technology to transfer welfare benefits has been a runaway success in poverty reduction. However, the speeding up of the process in the last five years also owes to improved outcomes as the absolute number falls. Yet, India is home to around 229 million poor people, the largest population by country. It will have to step up efforts for accelerated poverty reduction.
