Watch: Liz Truss resigns as British prime minister
UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister, telling a press conference in Downing Street that she cannot deliver her programme.
"I cannot deliver the mandate for which I was elected," she said.
A leadership election within the ruling Conservative Party will be held next week.
Truss threw the country into a crisis when she announced an unfunded tax-cutting mini-budget two weeks ago that caused a market meltdown during an already severe cost-of-living crisis. The Chancellor subsequently resigned and the measures were withdrawn.
The Home Secretary resigned on Wednesday but Truss had insisted that she is 'a fighter, not a quitter'.
More than a dozen Conservative MPs had publicly urged Truss to resign. Many more were reported to have submitted letters calling for her to be removed, although party rules currently forbid another leadership campaign for 12 months.
Truss on Thursday met with Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 committee of backbench Conservative MPs that ultimately has the power to decide her fate, Downing Street said.
