Netflix refuse to put disclaimer on The Crown despite plea from Dame Judi Dench

NETFLIX is defying Dame Judi Dench by refusing to add a factual disclaimer to The Crown episodes.

Insiders say the streaming giant was “panicked and rocked” after the Oscar winner, 87, blasted its fictionalised accounts of royal life as “cruelly unjust”.

But it has snubbed her calls to add a warning to every episode featuring its made-up plot-lines.

Dame Judi’s comments in a letter to The Times came days after ex-PM Sir John Major slammed “nonsense” scenes claiming Prince Charles tried to usurp his mother.

A trailer released yesterday features The Crown’s recreation of Princess Diana’s infamous 1995 TV interview with Martin Bashir.

Bashir, played by Prasanna Puwanarajah, 40, also says of Diana: “She opens her mouth and hand grenades come out.”

Seconds-long excerpts of the interview will be shown instead, when series five of the global hit show returns on November 9.

But in a victory for Prince William, who says the discredited one-to-one should never be shown again, producers have scrapped plans to reveal it at length.

A TV insider said: “Producers decided showing anything extensive could provoke a backlash.”

The new series covers 1990 to 1997, as the marriage of Charles, played by Dominic West, 53, and Diana, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, 32, continues to fall apart.

Netflix said the show’s title page describes it as fictionalised drama but confirmed it will not add a warning to individual episodes.

A spokeswoman for Netflix said: “The episodes that dramatise events surrounding the Panorama interview remain unchanged.”
