Nevada shows how dangerous the election deniers are nationally. We have to stop them
The unifying theme for Republicans running for key positions in 2022 is the Big Lie, denying the results of the 2020 election. That includes candidates for U.S. House and Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and Secretary of State—as well as for state legislatures. The majority of Republican candidates in all of these races, analyses by both The New York Times and Washington Post have found, are Big Lie proponents, and many of them are favored to win.
Those are the big races, including the ones that have ultimate authority over elections. And in all these states, some local elections officials are either fighting to stay put and keep the elections they run free and fair, or are being forced out by increasingly serious political and personal threats. While the election deniers haven’t taken over for 2022, they are setting the board for 2024 all across the country, aiming not just at the statewide seats, but locally where they can do real damage.
