'Would have shot him myself': GOP candidate for Oklahoma prosecutor is running on back of slain teen

0

An Oklahoma Republican is running for district attorney in the state's largest county, and he's doing it on the back of a 15-year-old boy shot 13 times in the head, chest, and other areas and killed by police. “I would have shot him myself,” Republican nominee and Oklahoma County Commissioner Kevin Calvey said during a primary forum the Oklahoma City Free Press covered last year. Calvey was referring to Stavian Rodriguez, who was suspected of robbing the Okie Gas Express on Nov. 23, 2021 in an incident that ended in first-degree manslaughter charges for five Oklahoma City officers who responded to the robbery call.

Retiring Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater, who charged the officers for firing lethal shots at Stavian, called the officers’ actions “unnecessary” in remarks covered by Oklahoma News 4. Calvey, however, alleged officers had no other choice, and he made up a version of the shooting that had an officer facing a gun "stuck in his face."
