In our November issue

This month, we take a deep dive into four buildings making a scene in their respective cities. Diamond Schmitt and Tod Williams Billie Tsien’s David Geffen Hall in New York City and Moriyama Teshima and Bélanger Salach’s Place des Arts in Sudbury create vibrant performing arts venues that are also hotspots for community gathering. And in Toronto, Shim-Sutcliffe’s Ace Hotel and Kohn Shnier and ERA’s University College renovation have quickly established a strong public presence as places where high design meets everyday functionality.

While many of us may be out in public more and more, not all of us are back in the office. Our editorial looks at how architecture offices are negotiating the balance between in-person, online, and hybrid work models. And an article by Jake Nicholson takes a hard look at a crucial in-person project milestone—the RFP site meeting.

The lines between real-life and virtual worlds can often be blurry. That’s the case in an exhibition of works by German artist Thomas Demand at Toronto’s MOCA, reviewed by Peter Sealy. It’s also the case in creative practice: Sami Kazemi looks at how new AI technologies could fundamentally change architecture.

Finally, in time for holiday gifting, we leave you with a trio of book reviews, looking at Adele Weder’s biography of Ron Thom, Olivier Vallerand’s book on the queering of domestic space, and The Site Magazine’s newest publications.
