THIS is the heartstopping moment pilots fought to land a plane at Bristol airport while battling terrifying high winds.

The crew in the cockpit of the Aurigny ATR72-600 aircraft were forced to wrestle against powerful gales on Wednesday.

Shocking footage captured the aircraft’s dramatic descent on the rainy afternoon as they attempted to land at in Bristol.

The nose of the plane was dragged to one side as the pilots struggled to set up a smooth landing amid Storm Claudio.

As they approached the runway, the aircraft was still concerningly veering off course as the turbulent weather took hold.

Although many viewers watched with baited breath as they prepared for a bump landing, the pilots managed to expertly position the jet with just seconds to spare.

Skywatchers were left in awe as they watched the swaying plane complete its daunting descent.

It comes as Storm Claudio continues to batter the UK with rain and wind, with gusts reaching up to 44mph.

A yellow warning for rain is in place for southern Scotland from 10am until 6pm and Northern Ireland from 8am until 3pm.

The weather agency has urged those affected to be aware of potential travel disruption and flooding as a result of the forecast downpours.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning for wind will be active from 7am until 10pm.
