Game and thrones as King Charles meets sporting royalty
The King’s swimming patter didn’t flop as he greeted sporting royalty at Buckingham Palace last night.
Around 150 Olympic and Paralympic athletes who scooped medals in Tokyo and Beijing were welcomed by Charles, the Queen Consort and senior royals.
‘We chatted about how we punch a hole in the water, and I said if we get it wrong it can hurt a lot,’ diver Matty Lee said.
‘He said, “I don’t know how you do that”. I did not think I would be talking about belly flops with the King.’
Fellow guest Tom Daley, who won a gold medal with diving partner Lee, shared the late Queen had once joked ‘maybe I should have been a gymnast’ after he told her a short stature helps.
Also there were cyclist Dame Sarah Storey, whose three golds in Tokyo made her our greatest Paralympian, and Eve Muirhead’s curling team, which triumphed at the Winter Games.
