Tanah Merah Country Club set for Singapore Women’s Open; Inaugural national championship

SINGAPORE, 3 November 2022 – The Singapore Golf Association(SGA) today announced that the inaugural Singapore Women’s Open (SWO) will make its long-awaited debut at the Tanah Merah Country Club from December 9 – 11. Hana Financial Group is to be the title sponsor for the event, continuing its long tradition of supporting the development of women’s golf in Asia Pacific.

Boasting a lucrative prize purse of SGD$1.1million, the tournament jointly sanctioned by SGA and the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA), forms a part of the Ladies Asian Tour (LAT) Series and was initially scheduled to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. From the outset, Hana Financial Group, one of APAC’s leading global financial institutions, made the commitment to be a part of establishing Singapore’s national title for women’s golf.

The event will be staged on the championship Tampines Course and will feature a field of 102 players comprising KLPGA members, invitees from 12 APAC countries, major prospects and amateurs.

The event will be the first major international golf tournament open to the general public since early 2020. Details on tickets will be announced shortly.

Singapore’s leading professionals Koh Sock Hwee and Amanda Tan will spearhead the local challenge, together with the likes of talented amateurs Shannon Tan, Aloysa Margiela Atienza and Jaymie Ng.

SGA President Tan Chong Huat said “It has been a long two year wait; we are so glad the tournament will finally take place in December. Working hand in hand with all the stakeholders we are fully committed to getting the event off to a great start and set the foundation for all the future editions to come.”

Tanah Merah Country Club President Ronald Ong is looking forward to welcoming some of the best women golfers in the region and beyond to the Club’s championship Tampines Course.

Ong commented “Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) has a long tradition of supporting women’s golf and has in the past hosted the Kosaido Asahi Ladies Championship, Lexus Cup, HSBC Women’s Champions (now renamed HSBC Women’s World Championship) and Queen Sirikit Cup. TMCC is pleased to continue this tradition with the very first Singapore Women’s Open. I am sure we will see some terrific action over the three days.”

The SWO is led by event promoter Mediapro Asia, which has constantly provided strong support to women’s events. The company started its golf journey in the region with the Ladies European Tour, followed by the KLPGA, and has been working with the SGA since 2020. Mediapro Asia is also responsible for distributing broadcast rights and selling sponsorship rights for the SWO in Singapore and overseas.
