Industry helps raise £230,000 for Transaid with cycle ride through Malawi

0

A five-day cycle ride through the searing heat of Malawi by a group of logistics professionals has helped raise more than £230,000 for international transport charity Transaid.

Clive Brooks (pictured), MD of Palletline-owned ABE Ledbury, joined others from the industry to brave temperatures of over 30°C and take part in Cycle Malawi in the heart of Africa.

Proceeds support Transaid’s remit to provide professional driver and maintenance training in the countries it works with, improving both transport management systems and rural access.

Other areas of its work include improving road safety and ensuring access to healthcare for drivers and other transport representatives.

The cyclists experienced unique wildlife and African sunsets as they made their way from Senga to Mulanje, close to the border with Mozambique.

Along the way, the breathtaking scenery included Lake Malawi, Mount Mulanje, Liwonde National Park and the Zomba Plateau.

Brooks said: “Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and faces many challenges, including poor infrastructure, low farming yield, high unemployment, fuel shortages and power shortages.

“Despite these challenges everyone we met on our journey were friendly and welcoming. A remarkable country.”

Brooks’ personal efforts raised £4,635, which has been added to the final total.
