Retirement home evacuated after fire breaks out with major 999 response

A retirement home in central Middlesbrough has been evacuated after fire broke out, with police, fire service and paramedics responding.

Residents were being treated on scene with some wearing masks with breathing apparatus and others being put into ambulances wrapped in foil sheets.

Linthorpe Road area of Middlesbrough has been closed off by police whilst they deal with the incident at St George’s House.

Cleveland Fire Brigade said: ‘Seven appliances and crews wearing breathing apparatus successfully dealt with an incident in Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.

‘All residents are now safe and crews will remain on the scene for a while.’

St George’s House is made up of 22 flats described as retirement housing offering sheltered accommodation, where residents mostly live independently but can also access support.

At 6pm, they had said: ‘We are currently attending a large incident at St. Georges House, Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.

‘We have several resources in attendance with the Police and Ambulance, please avoid the area if you can.’
