The number of such proposals was 749 in 2020-21 and 590 in 2019-20. In 2020, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) came out with a new FDI policy to curb "opportunistic takeovers or acquisitions of Indian companies due to the Covid-19 pandemic". The move was further aimed to examine Chinese investments in critical sectors.
