Study reveals cells have 'memories' stored in protein chains

As cells go about their daily business, they activate a number of genes and cellular pathways. MIT engineers have now coaxed cells to record the sequence of events in a long protein chain that can be imaged with a light microscope.

Cells that have been programmed to generate these chains continuously add building blocks that encode specific cellular events.
