Lula to meet Biden on February 10
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday said he will travel to the U.S. on February 10, where he will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden.
“I’m here for us to rebuild our image abroad,” Lula told a crowd of union leaders gathered at the presidential palace. “On Sunday, I’ll go to Argentina, on [February] 10, I’ll go to the U.S., in March I’ll go to China,” Lula said. The president added he will soon host leaders from Germany and France, without specifying names or dates.
The U.S. Embassy in Brazil did not immediately comment on the date announced by Lula for his meeting with Mr. Biden.
Before taking office, Lula said at the COP27 UN Climate Conference in Egypt that “Brazil is back,” in a reference to the country’s commitments to “dialogue, multilateralism, and multipolarity.” During the election, he argued Brazil had become “a pariah” under the Jair Bolsonaro administration.
Lula will travel to Argentina next Monday and to Uruguay on January 25, keeping up with a tradition that newly-inaugurated presidents make their first trip abroad to South American countries. Mr. Bolsonaro broke this tradition in 2019 by making the World Economic Forum in Davos the destination of his first trip as president. Lula himself made his first trip as president in 2003 to Ecuador.
