Report: Antonio Conte wants ‘significant pay rise’ to sign new Spurs contract

0

The Evening Standard have revealed that Antonio Conte wants a significant pay rise on his current £15m per year salary to sign a new contract with Tottenham.

The future of Conte now appears increasingly uncertain after Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal, a result which means the Lilywhites now sit five points off a Champions League spot despite having played a game more than fourth-placed Manchester United.

Conte is currently the third highest-paid manager in the Premier League after Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, earning just £1m less than the Liverpool boss does (Sports Illustrated).

However, The Evening Standard assert that the 53-year-old wants a considerable bump to his annual salary in order to commit his long-term future to Spurs.

The report adds that Tottenham have the option of extending Conte’s current contract, which runs out in the summer, by a further 12 months, the club might decide against activating the option and opt for a divorce if results do not improve.

I do not think the requested pay rise would be an issue for the Spurs hierarchy but they will have doubts over handing Conte a new contract as it would mean that he would be owed a significant pay-off if they sack him.

Unless the performances and results improve considerably over the coming weeks and months, it will not be in Tottenham’s interest to hand the Italian a long-term deal.
