A group of activists in Ludhiana, India filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in November asking the authorities to clean the Sidhwan Canal. The canal is a major water body in Ludhiana and is polluted from Gill Bridge up to Lohara. The activists claim that the municipal corporation (MC) is only doing this "eyewash" exercise in order to avoid punishment from the NGT, and that the actual problems with the canal are not being addressed. The MC has started fencing work to protect the canal, and is also collecting fines from people who pollute it. The activists also claim that CCTV cameras should be installed near the canal to monitor those who are polluting it.
