Speculation was fuelled by an article in Variety.com in which ITV chief exec Carolyn McCall said: “We have a contract.

“We’re contracted to this [season], so we will do that. And then we have no future commitments.

“And we haven’t made any statements about that.”

This was misinterpreted as confirmation that The Sun columnist would be dropped by the Saturday night quiz show after a five-year run.

But Clarkson’s Farm star Jeremy took to Twitter to tell followers: “So many kind messages about today’s reports.

“But relax. Lisa and I have not split up and I have not been sacked as host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.”

That was followed by an ITV statement: “For the avoidance of doubt, neither Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? nor Jeremy Clarkson have been cancelled.”

He came under fire after a column in The Sun about Prince Harry’s wife Meghan, for which he apologised.
