Cheltenham Festival tips: experts reveal their 2023 picks for Tuesday’s races

The 2023 Cheltenham Festival runs from 14–17 March at Prestbury Park and we have asked the experts to share their Cheltenham Festival tips to try to help you pick a winner or two.

Cheltenham Festival tips: experts reveal their selections for the opening day’s races

Diverge (1.30pm Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle)
Trainer: Willie Mullins. Jockey: Mr PW Mullins
Racing journalist Julian Muscat says: “With favourite Facile Vega looking vulnerable, his stablemate from trainer Willie Mullins, Diverge, can take advantage in a race where his Flat-race speed will be an asset.”

Into Overdrive (2.50pm Ultima Handicap Chase)
Trainer: Mark Walford. Jockey: Jamie Hamilton
H&H racing correspondent Marcus Armytage says: “He’s only been beaten by one horse this season and that was Venetia Williams’ leading chaser L’Homme Presse. His trainer Mark Walford is in good form and the horse has been kept for this race.”

Constitution Hill (3.30pm Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy)
Trainer: Nicky Henderson. Jockey: Nico De Boinville.
The Cheltenham Festival is on ITV every day from 1-4.30pm and ITV Racing presenter Alice Plunkett has picked out Constitution Hill as her banker of the week. “Unlike most bankers, the price is irrelevant with this horse as even hardened pros are saying we must simply enjoy the race, enjoy the horse,” says Alice. “I hope above hope, he wins as champions are a joy to champion.”
Former champion jockey Richard Johnson agrees: “Constitution Hill may be one of the obvious ones, but I’d say he’s the best horse running at this year’s Festival. He looks like an absolute superstar and, being a bit biased, we’re hoping the British can find one or two stars because it’s been a bit of a whitewash for the Irish over the past couple of years! It would be lovely to see him doing what he’s been doing all season and putting up another fantastic performance – whichever side of the sea you’re on, I think we can all appreciate a very good horse.”

Brandy Love (4.10pm Close Brother Mares’ Hurdle)
Trainer: Willie Mullins. Jockey: Paul Townend
H&H racing editor Jennifer Donald says: “After Willie Mullins secured a record haul at last year’s Festival, taking his total to 88, it wouldn’t be impossible that he reaches a landmark 100 this week and the seven-year-old Brandy Love could add to his tally. Tuesday’s mares’ race has attracted a stellar field which looks set to be an absolute cracker, with champion hurdler Honeysuckle hoping to return to the Cheltenham winner’s enclosure one last time, and the Nicky Henderson-trained Marie’s Rock, winner of the race last year, lines up as favourite. But Brandy Love, one of three Mullins raiders in this race alone, could give her key rivals a run for their money in the opening day’s soft ground, having won a Grade One at Fairyhouse on yielding last year. She finished third in an eye-catching prep run at Punchestown last month, which should set her up for a big race.”
