2 Dead, 9 Injured After Truck Runs Over Pedestrians in Canada

On Monday, two people were killed, and several others were injured after a driver hit pedestrians in Amqui, a town in the Québec region of Canada.

The incident occurred just after 3 PM along St-Benoit Boulevard in Amqui, about 350 kilometres northeast of Quebec City.

The two dead are a man in his 60s and another in his 70s. An SQ spokesman said that children are among the injured being treated at the Amqui Hospital, CTV reported.

According to the official, two of the nine injured were in severe condition, and the other seven were in good condition.

Five injured people were delivered to nearby hospitals, including three to Quebec City, Rimouski, and Montreal.

Francois Bonnardel, the province’s public safety minister, tweeted that early reports showed a “serious accident” had occurred.

“My heart is with the people of Amqui, Quebec today,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a Twitter message. “As we learn more about the tragic events that have occurred, I am keeping everyone affected in my thoughts,” he added.

The driver has been seized by the police and is in custody, according to the officials, and the police will start the investigation to see whether the act was deliberate.

This is the second incident; the first was last month while a bus crashed into a daycare centre in a Montreal suburb, killing two four-year-old children and injuring six others in a deliberate act, according to officials.
