I’m a gardening expert – the job to do now to make sure your grass bounces back for summer

A GARDENING EXPERT has revealed the one gardening job that is vital to do now to ensure you have the perfect lawn this summer.

While the current weather may not entice you to go and get your gardening gloves out, it’s imperative you do if you want a lush lawn this summer.

Leigh Barnes, gardening expert at Jacksons Fencing, revealed the job you need to stick at the top of your to-do list.

So it’s time to get out your gardening gloves pronto as you’re going to have to get rid of any moss or weeds that have taken over the grass.

While they may not seem like a huge issue, they can stint grass growth and stop vital nutrients form getting to your lawn.

Speaking to the Express, he said: “When spring arrives, turn your attention to lawn maintenance to ensure you’re clearing away any areas of weeds or moss that grew throughout the winter months.

“The earlier in spring you do this, the more time your lawn has to bounce back from the colder weather.

“It will also save you time and work during the summer months when plants need more attention.”

Pesky moss can easily be removed by simply raking or scarifying a lawn or by applying a moss remover.

Of course, weeds can be removed by either using a weed killer or by hand using a trowel or fork.

For large weeds with long roots, it’s best to dig deeper to ensure the weed doesn’t grow back.

The expert explained that after removing the weeds and moss you may notice bald patches – which you don’t want to deal with in the summer.

He added: “Reseed bald patches when the weather warms, but delay if colder weather is still present.

“Wait for the lawn to be consistently growing before using a lawn feeder.

“Opt for a spring lawn feeder between April and May as it will include the right nutrients for your lawn at this time.

“If your lawn looks like it needs another boost during the summer months, swap to a summer feeder.”

It’s important to note that moss isn’t always bad for lawn health.

It can help retain moisture in the soil by soaking up rainfall and is a habitat for wildlife.
