Manchester United star signs new four-year contract - report
Luke Shaw has signed a new four-year contract at Manchester United, the club have confirmed via their official website.
Shaw was first brought to the club as a teenager by former manager Louis van Gaal in 2014, signing from Southampton for an estimated £30 million fee.
He made his competitive debut one month into the season, in a 2-1 home victory against West Ham United.
One year later, he suffered a career-threatening injury in a Champions League group stage fixture against PSV Eindhoven. He was substituted with a double leg fracture and was out of action for 11 months.
He won his first major trophies at Old Trafford in the 2016/17 season, helping his side to the Carabao Cup and Europa League.
Although he only made six appearances from a possible 21 across both competitions, with then-manager Jose Mourinho preferring the likes of Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, and Marcos Rojo.
It wasn’t until the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that Shaw started to become a regular starter for the Red Devils. He was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in 2018/19, featuring 40 times in all competitions.
His peak at Man United undeniably came in the 2020/21 season, when he was included in PFA Premier League Team of the Season. He played 47 times for Solskjaer’s side, most notably scoring in a derby against runaway champions Manchester City.
That form earned him a recall to the England national team, having been out of the squad for over two years. Later that summer, he scored in the 2020 European Championship final against Italy.
The signings of Alex Telles and Tyrell Malacia put Shaw’s place in the Man Utd starting XI under threat. However, he has retained his position and remains a regular starter for Erik ten Hag.
He added his third major trophy to his collection earlier this season, playing a part in United’s Carabao Cup triumph. In the final, he assisted Casemiro’s opener with a pinpoint cross from a free kick.
The 27-year-old has now extended his stay with the 20-time English champions. The club have announced that Shaw has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2027.
The next month is a huge one for Man United, as they remain involved in a tight race for a top-four spot.
They have six Premier League fixtures, a Europa League quarter-final and an FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion.
