THE EASTER break is fast approaching, with many taking to their cars to visit family and friends across the country and abroad.

If you own an EV, there’s also the issue of how much range you can eke out from a single charge and where on your route you’ll be able to top up the car’s battery.

This problem is made even worse when the car is stacked with passengers and extra luggage – creating more weight which in turn reduces overall efficiency.

Luckily, carrier company Thule has got all creative and designed a new type of cargo box for EVs – one in which you can store all your gear, but not lose any valuable range.

How? Well, the company’s new ‘Arcos’ box is fixed onto the towbar rather than the roof and, during cold weather testing in the Arctic, it has even appeared to improve range when attached to an EV, reports topgear.com.

Aerodynamic performance is all-important with electric cars, so using a regular rooftop-mounted solution might not be the best idea – particularly on longer journeys.

A group of Swedish journalists tested various cargo boxes across more than 3,550 miles in differing weather conditions.

They used Volkswagen I.D4s for the testing and found that the hard-shelled Arcos box could deliver more range than cars fitted with a roof-mounted box.

TopGear reports that an ID.4 fitted with the Thule product could travel at least ten more miles than one without any box at all.
