India Avalanche Kills Six, Injures 30 and Traps Many More: Police
At least six tourists were killed, 30 others were injured, and many more were trapped after an avalanche struck the northeastern Indian State of Sikkim on Tuesday, according to the Indian army as quoted by local media.
At least seven tourists died in an avalanche in Sikkim, an Indian state in the Himalayas, close to a mountain pass leading to Tibet, according to the Indian army, and many more are reportedly still missing.
Army said it was estimated that five to six cars carrying up to 30 visitors to the strategically positioned Nathu La crossing between Sikkim and Tibet were buried under the snow when the avalanche struck.
“We are yet to ascertain how many people are still trapped. Seventeen people have been rescued, of which eight are very critical and have been moved to a hospital,” Tenzing Loden Lepcha, a senior police official, told Reuters over the phone.
However, at least 70 individuals were reportedly feared to be stuck in the snow, according to the rescue officials.
Sikkim, often known as the “Land of Mystic Splendor,” is a popular travel destination since it is situated beneath Mount Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain in the world.
