Japan Contributes $5 Million to WFP in Afghanistan

The World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations said on Tuesday that Japan had provided an additional $5 million toward the emergency response in Afghanistan.

The WFP said that 9 million people could go without food aid in April if new funding is not received; hence, Japan’s contribution is critical.

“The Government of Japan has been a consistent and strong supporter of the Afghan people and WFP over the past years. Japan sees food assistance as one of the primary ways to reach sustainable development and human security”, said Ambassador Takashi Okada. 

The organization’s Country Director in Afghanistan, Hsiao-Wei Lee, expressed its gratitude to the government of Japan for this latest contribution adding that “Catastrophic hunger knocks on Afghanistan’s doors and unless humanitarian support is sustained, hundreds of thousands more Afghans will need assistance to survive.”

The statement added, “Nearly 20 million Afghans do not know where their next meal will come from. Six million of them are one step away from famine. WFP urgently needs US$93 million to assist 13 million people in April and US$800 million for the next six months.”

Japan was among the top 10 donors to the WFP in Afghanistan in 2022. The statement said that Japan had provided $96.57 million to the WFP’s humanitarian effort in Afghanistan over the past five years, including this most recent contribution.

Early in 2023, Japan gave the World Food Programme in Afghanistan US$12.4 million, enabling WFP to offer 330,000 people needing food aid and nutritional services that could save their lives.
