US Military Kills Top Daesh Commander in Syria Drone Strike

The American-led coalition carried out a drone strike in northwest Syria killing a top commander of the Islamic State who was supposedly in charge of organizing attacks in Europe, the US military said on Tuesday.

The statement said that the man killed was identified as Kkalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, who was responsible for planning Daesh attacks in Europe and developing the group’s leadership structure.

The military statement added that his death “will temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plot external attacks,” as Reuters quoted.

In 2014, Daesh reached its height of strength in large portions of Iraq and Syria before being driven out of both countries. According to a UN study from February, the group has about 7,000 members and supporters distributed over Syria and Iraq, with about half of them fighting.

According to a UN report, the threat posed to global peace and security by the Islamic State and its affiliates will be severe in the second half of 2022 and will have grown in and around conflict zones where it has a foothold.

The operation was the most recent in a string of attacks over the previous years that targeted terrorists with ties to al-Qaida and high-ranking members of the Islamic State group in northwest Syria.

Two men were killed in a drone attack in February and were initially thought to be Horas al-Din members by local activists. Later, according to the Observatory, one of the two fatalities was a high-ranking representative of the Daesh organization that was defeated in Syria in March 2019.
