A grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump on nearly three dozen felony charges in connection to a $130,000 hush-money payment to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
The indictment, which was voted on by a Manhattan grand jury last week, follows a years-long investigation by the Manhattan district attorney's office. It is the first time a current or former US president has ever been criminally charged.
The Manhattan district attorney's office spent years investigating Trump's finances and previously brought a criminal case against the Trump Organization and Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg. Weisselberg pleaded guilty to the charges against him and a jury convicted Trump's company late last year.
Prosecutors continued their investigation and examined payments made to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had an affair with Trump — which the ex-president denied. Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer, maintains he funneled $130,000 to Daniels at Trump's direction in a plot to keep her quiet ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
